Porsche Engine Re-building
Rennology Motor Sport specializes in the re-building of Porsche engines. From a simple refresh of components for an air-cooled engine, to the enlargement and hardening of water-cooled engines for competition, we offer the most complete engine building service in the Chicago area.
Porsche Water Cooled-Engines
Even well maintained, low mileage engines can have significant component failures. In fact, it is more likely that an older, lower mileage engine will have a failure as opposed to higher mileage engines. There are no hard and fast rules, but if it does happen, there are many options available to rebuild an engine, rather than replace it.
D-Chunk or Slipped-Sleeve Failure
Commonly, as seen below, Porsche engines can experience a slipped sleeve or the classic d-chunk is blown out of a cylinder wall. Rennology Motor Sport works in partnership with LN Engineering to fix these problems, assuming no case damage has occurred, by using Nickies.TM

NickiesTM are made of advanced aluminum alloy that is up to 66% stronger than the original cast in LokasilTM bores or MMC sleeves from the factory. The alloy coating improves the thermal conductivity (unlike steel sleeves), reduces wear and friction, and allows for larger bores with more power. There is no loss of strength or longevity and the solid aluminum NickiesTMcome with a lifetime warranty on cylinder plating.
IMS Failure
There is significant discussion on the subject of the IMS Bearing and its common failure. The bearing is similar to an axle bearing, in that it is a sealed unit housing steel balls and a permanent lubricant. The seals and the lubricant inside the IMS Bearing are intended to last for the life of your engine. However, as the IMS bearing ages, it has significant potential to deteriorate.
Eventually, IMS Bearing's outer race begins to make contact with the IMS flange. This damages both the Intermediate Shaft and the flange itself. The result is the valve-train timing becomes compromised and components collide resulting in metal debris traveling throughout the engine. At this point, an engine rebuild or a replacement engine are the likely outcomes.
Head Porting and Polishing
No engine re-build is complete without taking advantage of the opportunity to work on the cylinder heads and valve train components. Rennology Motor Sport works in partnership with Werner Machine to complete head projects. Werner Machine specializes in porting, polishing and improving flow through larger valves in Porsche cylinder heads.
